Sparky on Leadership

The late Sparky Anderson, Hall of Fame baseball manager and the only major league manager to win world series with teams in both leagues (American – Detroit and National – Cincinnati), was quoted on a number of subjects.  Sparky was a humble man about his role as a manager,  Two quotes that I feel apply to those in leadership today are:

“People who live in the past are generally afraid to compete in the present.  I’ve got my faults, but living in the past is not one of them.  There’s no future in it.”

“The players make the manager, it’s never the other way, I don’t believe a manager ever won a pennant.  I think the only thing the manager has to do is keep things within certain boundaries.”
